The bowls are a natural, instinctive sport that originates in different forms since ancient times in east Asia (China, Turkey) and North Africa (Egypt), in ancient Greece and Rome. During the Middle Age the game of bowls has developed so much that it has arrived in a very similar form at the modern competitions. The bowls were realized in stone, wood and other different materials until the introduction of synthetic materials that permits today exceptional performances and spectacular shows.
In Italy this sport finds its greatest expression. The game is played either in small handicraft open fields or in large architectural structures (bocciodromi), where important national and international competitions take place. The Bowls League is, in Italy, the second most important sport league after the Football League; it can count about 90.000 associates of different categories and more than a million of fans.
